  • 1. What will my child get paid, and what are their entitlements?

Apprentices are paid wages, which typically increase as skills improve. They also receive leave, superannuation, and other workplace entitlements similar to other employees, according to state and federal legislation.

  • 2. How many hours will they work, and what does their schedule look like?

An apprentice can expect to split time between the workplace and their training provider. Work hours depend on employer arrangements, trade demands, and the training plan.

  • 3. Is there a safety risk?

Yes – trades often involve machinery, electricity, heights, and physical work. Employers must provide induction, personal protective equipment (PPE), and follow workplace safety laws.

  • 4. Can they switch to a different trade mid-way or move to university later?

Sometimes yes – it depends on how many units are transferable and how aligned the fields are. Some apprentices transition into university through bridging programs or by using credit from their formal training.

  • 5. Will they be qualified interstate or in other states?

Yes. Qualifications in Australian apprenticeships are nationally recognised, so your child’s credentials should travel between states, subject to licensing rules in particular trades.

  • 6. What support is there for people with disabilities or from diverse backgrounds?

Many programs offer support, mentoring, flexible arrangements, or adjusted training. Field managers and government agencies often provide assistance or subsidies to help ensure equitable access.
