MENTORING & WELLBEING SUPPORT
Taking on an apprentice is more than teaching technical skills. As a Host Employer, you play a vital role in their growth and development, but you’re not expected to do it all on your own. VACC provides mentoring and wellbeing support to make sure apprentices stay motivated, healthy, and on track throughout their training.
Mentoring in the Workplace
Apprentices learn best from experienced tradespeople. As their Host Employer, you will:
- Provide hands-on training in real workshop conditions
- Supervise and guide them as they build new skills
- Share industry knowledge, standards, and professional habits
- Encourage them to take on more responsibility as they progress
- Give feedback and support that helps them succeed in both the workshop and at TAFE
Your involvement helps shape apprentices into future technicians who are not only job-ready but aligned with the culture of your business.

Supporting Apprentice Wellbeing
A positive and supportive workplace makes all the difference. As a Host Employer, you contribute by:
Checking in on how apprentices are coping with work and training
Encouraging open conversations when challenges come up
Promoting teamwork and inclusion so apprentices feel part of your business
Creating a Safe Workplace
Safety is the foundation of every apprenticeship. As a Host Employer, you commit to:
- Providing a safe and compliant workplace that meets OHSE standards
- Supplying the right equipment and ensuring apprentices use PPE correctly
- Setting expectations for safe behaviour around tools, vehicles, and equipment
- Leading by example so apprentices understand how safety underpins professional practice
Apprentices rely on you to demonstrate safe habits that will stay with them for life.

Building Trust and Communication
Sometimes apprentices may hesitate to raise concerns. As their Host Employer, you can encourage trust by:
- Making it clear they can come to you with questions or issues
- Listening to their concerns and working with them on solutions
- Creating an environment where respect and teamwork are valued
If a problem goes beyond what can be managed in the workplace, your Field Manager and VACC are always available to step in with extra support.
