ABOUT APPRENTICESHIPS

Hiring an apprentice or trainee means bringing new talent into your business while also helping shape the future of the automotive industry

How It Works

An apprenticeship or traineeship is a structured program where the apprentice is directly employed by VACC. They are then placed with your business as the Host Employer. This setup takes the administrative load off you while still giving you the opportunity to train and mentor a future tradesperson.

VACC

pays the apprentices wages, superannuation, and entitlements.

Types of Apprenticeships

There are different pathways to suit different stages of a person’s career. These options give flexibility for businesses to find apprentices that fit their needs.

  • Full-time apprenticeships

Traditional four-year programs, usually 38 hours per week, with time split between work and training. Over the course of their apprenticeship, Apprentices don’t just learn the trade – they develop into reliable technicians who can one day step into senior technician, supervisor, or even management roles

  • School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

Designed for students who want to start a career in automotive while completing Year 11 or 12. They combine part-time work with a Certificate II in Automotive. For employers, it’s a chance to introduce motivated young people to the trade early, see how they fit within your team, and help them build the foundations to become confident apprentices and future technicians.

Nationally Recognised Qualifications

At the end of the program, apprentices and trainees graduate with a nationally recognised qualification.

This means:

  • Skills are recognised across Australia.
  • Apprentices are qualified to continue building their careers.
  • Employers know their team members meet national industry standards.

For businesses, it ensures that the training you provide is part of a bigger system that maintains quality, consistency, and future career opportunities.
