TAFE & TRAINING

Your Automotive Apprenticeship combines two types of learning: practical skills in the workplace and formal study at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), usually TAFE. Learn everything about TAFE & Training here.

What is TAFE & RTO Training?

As an apprentice, you’ll attend an RTO (TAFE) to complete your off-the-job training. Your RTO delivers the training plan, assesses your skills, and issues your qualification when you’ve met all requirements.

  • Training is nationally recognised.

  • RTOs work directly with VACC and your Host Business to track progress.

  • Your RTO time is part of your paid working week.

How does TAFE fit into the week

Attending TAFE is counted as part of your standard 38-hour work week.

Length

Most apprentices complete 5–8 weeks of TAFE training per year during their first three years.

Abscenses

Absences from TAFE count as absences from work -  you must notify both your Field Manager and the RTO if you cannot attend.

Progress

Training attendance is just as important as time in the workshop, and non-attendance can affect your progression.

Attendance & Expectations

When attending TAFE:

  • Wear the correct PPE (steel-capped boots and overalls).

  • Report any absences to your Field Manager and RTO immediately.

  • Notify in advance if you know you will miss a class.

RTOs will regularly update VACC on your attendance and results, so it’s important to treat TAFE days like normal workdays.

FAQ's

  • What if I miss a TAFE block?

You must inform your RTO and Field Manager immediately. Missed training may delay your progression.

  • Can I get credits for previous study?

Yes. If you’ve already completed relevant training, such as a Certificate II in Automotive, you may receive credits that shorten your off-the-job training time.

Having trouble at TAFE?

Don’t wait until it becomes a problem. Contact your Field Manager early so we can help you get back on track.
