TIPS FOR APPLYING

Starting an apprenticeship is a big step. This page gives you advice on how to get ready for the application process, what to expect in interviews, and how to use support networks to help you succeed from day one.

Before Applying

Before you apply, make sure your resume highlights any training or experience you already have, even if it’s from school or short placements. Having the right documents ready also helps the process move faster once you’re offered a role.

Build a strong resume

List school-based training, VET studies, or work experience. Include skills like safe tool use and basic servicing.

Highlight prior training

Add pre-apprenticeship courses such as Certificate II in Automotive. These may reduce your TAFE time later

Prepare key documents

Have your Tax File Number, bank details, and super fund ready for induction if your application is successful

Interview Preparation

We know you may not have years of workshop experience yet, so focus on attitude, safety awareness, and willingness to learn. Going in with examples and a positive approach will help you stand out.

  • Industry-focused questions

Be ready to talk about your interest in cars, practical experience, and teamwork!

  • Extra-curricular experience

If you have taken part in school projects, sports, or casual jobs, talk about what you learned. These experiences highlight qualities that we look for.

  • Showing enthusiasm

Employers are looking for people who genuinely want to be in the trade. Even if you don’t have a lot of hands-on experience yet, showing interest goes a long way. Talk about why you enjoy working with cars or machinery, or what motivated you to choose an apprenticeship.

Networking and Support

Every workshop you train in, every TAFE teacher you meet, and every Field Manager who supports you adds to your professional network. These connections not only help you get through your apprenticeship but also set you up for future job opportunities and career growth.

Field Manager

Field Managers are well connected and can point you toward employers or specialist roles. Staying in touch after your apprenticeship keeps those opportunities open.

Experienced staff

Tradespeople you work with daily can be valuable contacts. Show interest, ask questions, and build a good reputation - it can lead to future recommendations.

Future Pathway

After your Certificate III, consider a Certificate IV or Diploma. Higher training plus strong connections can help you step into leadership roles.
