From Apprentice to Mentor: Jason’s Journey Through the Automotive Industry
When Jason Pasco started his VACC Light Vehicle Apprenticeship in 1989, he had no idea it would spark a lifelong career in the automotive industry. Back then, the appeal was simple – he loved the variety of working on all types of cars. Every day brought different cars, different challenges, and a chance to learn something new.
The early 1990s were not easy years. Interest rates were high, the country faced a recession, and unemployment was rising. But while many others in the trade lost their jobs, Jason’s connection with VACC meant he could keep working and continue building his skills.

By the time he completed his apprenticeship in 1993, Jason was ready to explore new opportunities. He spent the next nine years at Geelong’s Peck & Stoke Motors, a specialist workshop handling Jaguars, Peugeots, and Saabs. What started as a technician role soon evolved as he moved up to Master Technician, then Service Advisor, and finally Service Manager.

In 2001, Jason took a new step, joining Porsche Cars Australia as a Warranty Administrator which evolved into Dealer Operations for Australia and New Zealand. It was here that his interest in OEM operations and dealer networks really grew. The role opened doors to incredible experiences, including international travel and global press launches for new vehicles.
After years working with major automotive brands, Jason returned to VACC where his journey first began. Today, as Quality and Compliance Manager, he uses decades of experience to guide and support the next generation of apprentices.
Jason’s story shows how an apprenticeship can be the start of something much bigger. What began as hands-on workshop training became a career that has come full circle, from apprentice to mentor.
