FUTURE PATHWAYS

Future pathways start well before an apprenticeship begins. From selecting the right field, to learning and progressing on the job, through to advanced qualifications and leadership roles, apprenticeships create a clear career journey for your child.

Exploring Career Options Before Starting

Before an apprenticeship begins, your child can explore a wide range of trades – from light and heavy vehicle mechanics to spray painting, we offer Automotive Apprenticeships that cover a wide array of interests, skills and preferences.

At this stage, apprentices are encouraged to think about where their interests lie and what kind of work excites them. School-based apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeship programs can also provide a taste of different industries before committing full-time.

Progression During the Apprenticeship

Once training begins, the career pathway is already underway. Automotive Apprentices don’t just study – they work, earn, and gain skills that build every year. They progress through levels of training, with wage increases as they move from first year to final year. Along the way, they gain exposure to:

  • Day-to-day technical tasks in their chosen trade.
  • Teamwork, safety standards, and industry practices.
  • Formal training at TAFE or RTOs, leading to nationally recognised qualifications.

By the time they qualify, apprentices have years of experience, confidence in their trade, and a clear view of where they want to head next.

Opportunities After Qualification

Completing a trade opens doors to a wide range of future pathways. Your child might:

  • Work as a qualified tradesperson in their chosen field.
  • Progress into senior technician roles with greater responsibility.
  • Move into supervisory, estimating, or project management positions.
  • Become a business owner or contractor, building their own customer base.
  • Undertake specialist training in advanced diagnostics, automation, or emerging technologies such as EVs and renewables.

At VACC, we provide training programs to help members and apprentices upskill and progress further.

Success Stories & Career Journeys

Many industry leaders began as apprentices. Some started with a school-based program, chose a trade they loved, and later ran successful businesses. Others moved from regional workshops to large-scale infrastructure projects or even international opportunities. These stories prove that the pathway is flexible and rewarding, no matter where it begins.
