FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our Frequently Asked Questions are here to help you understand how automotive apprenticeships with VACC work. From getting started and applying, through to training, , and workplace expectations.
  • 1. What is an automotive apprenticeship?

An automotive apprenticeship is a structured program that combines paid work in a workshop with formal training at TAFE. You’ll learn practical skills on the job, study the theory behind the trade through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and finish with a nationally recognised qualification.

  • 3. Do I need experience before applying?

No previous trade experience is required. Many apprentices start straight from school, while others are career changers. An interest in cars, problem-solving, and hands-on work is helpful.

  • 4. Do I need a driver’s licence?

A driver’s licence is preferred because many Host Businesses require you to move vehicles or travel to worksites. However, it is not essential for all placements, especially at the start of your apprenticeship.

  • 5. How long does an apprenticeship take?

An automotive apprenticeship usually takes three to four years. You’ll progress through levels each year, with your pay and responsibilities increasing as you develop skills. Some apprentices may finish earlier under competency-based progression.

  • 6. What qualification do I get?

On completion you’ll earn a Certificate II or III trade qualification in your chosen automotive stream. This qualification is nationally recognised and can be used anywhere in Australia.

  • 7. What if I’ve already started another course?

If you already hold a Certificate III in the trade you want to apply for, you won’t be eligible to start an apprenticeship in that same trade. However, credits from other study (such as a VET course) may reduce your TAFE training time.

  • 8. How much will I get paid?

Your exact pay rate is determined by several factors including your age, the type of apprenticeship, and how far along you are in the program.

  • 9. Where will I be working?

VACC employs you directly and places you with a Host Business – a workshop that provides your day-to-day training. All Host Businesses are safety checked and approved before apprentices are placed.

We’ll endeavor to place you with a Host Business in your preferred area where possible.

  • 10. What happens after I apply?

Once you apply online, your suitability will be reviewed through our recruitment stages; which includes a phone screen, interview and aptitude test, introduction to a Host Business, pre-employment medical, a two-day induction, and then your official start in the workplace.
